(ii) Infections Caused by Bacteria: When bacterial infections affect a betta’s health, red spots and open sores appear on the skin. The eyes also become cloudy. As a remedy, the owner should treat the water with antibacterial medicines and should try to improve the water quality.

(iii) Fungus: When fungus attacks, the colors of the eys get discolored, and the skin becomes infected with white fungi growth. One should quarantine the fish as soon as possible and treat it with antifungal medicines specially designed for fishes.

(iv) Fin Rot: the fins become frayed, and the root portion of the fins often reddens. As a remedy, one should improve water quality. If necessary, one should consult a veterinarian doctor.

Food: A balanced diet should consist of various pellets, flakes, frozen, and wilted blood worms.

(i) One should give such an amount of food that the fish can consume in one to two minutes. Overfeeding can make the water cloudy. A betta fish needs three pellets in the morning and the same at night.

(ii) Frozen foods must be defrosted or made soft before giving it to the fish.

(iii) Baby fish need crushed food or smaller pellet while feeding.

(iv) One should soak the pellets before giving it to the betta. It would cause swelling inside the stomach, bloating, and problems of the bladder that may be fatal to the fish.

(v) One should collect the extra foods that remain after feeding to prevent cloudy water.

(vi) If the fish refuses to eat the pellets, it can be cut into smaller pieces to help the fish to eat with ease. If still, it does not eat, one can change the food with other pellets or more appropriately with bloodworms. (vii) Dried bloodworms are better to feed as live bloodworms can cause diseases.

Maintenance of the Water: Check the water temperature and the quality of the water weekly.

Heat: For each gallon, one should invest in 5 watts of power of a water heater. Bettas like to swim in warm water. 74-82 degrees are ideal for a betta fish. To distribute the heated pool in the fish tank, one should place the heater beside the filter. If the heat on both sides is different, then one should put two heaters to maintain proper temperature in each part of the tank.

Other Habitats: A male betta should not be placed with another male betta as it can cause aggression in both. A female betta fish also should not be set with a male betta fish apart from the time of breeding. Betta fish can live happily with other peaceful fishes. If one wishes to fill the tank with a variety of fishes, the betta should be placed last after adding all the other fishes. If one puts the betta fish first, it would not tolerate the fishes added after it and would end up killing all the other fishes. The heater should come with a thermostat.

Decorations: (i)One should avoid extra ornamented decorations to prevent tearing of the fins. One should not insert any hard plastic decorations as it can also cause shredding of ridges, which can further develop into fin rots. Plastic products also degrade water quality.

(ii)To decorate with living plants is a better idea as bettas love to hide and sleep among the leaves. Original plants also keep the water clean and clear. They absorb harmful substances like nitrates and also oxygenate the water.

Play With Betta Fish: Bettas love playing with their owners. They can recognize faces and are interested in simple games. A betta fish can also ask for food by going up and down the wall. Though, one should not tap on to the glasses, as it can cause the betta to go into a shock. A mirror should never be placed near the fish tank. It causes the fish to believe that there is a rival to him and can cause stress and unnecessary aggression.
